!Per oral history from Edith Richards Biggs, Joseph W. Thomas' nickname was "Keystone Joe" to differentiate him from his brother's father-in-law. Keystone Joe probably came to California with younger brother, Richard, to work a mining contract. Keystone Joe then probably returned to marry Jane Duncalf & start a family, but there was not enough work to support a family & he returned to Amador City to work. He wanted his family to come over, but Jane would not emigrate and he could not make a living in Cornwall. He worked & lived near his brother's family in California the rest of his life. He is buried with them in Sacramento, California.

RE: LAST NAME JOLLEY: Marriage record is Joly, Gravestone reads James Jolly Thomas. However "Lodgers" with Thomas Thomas & Mary Ann in 1851 Census are Robert Jolley age 15 and Francis Jolley age 19; also James Jolley Thomas' death certificate reads as "Jolley".

MARRIAGE: 1st marriage to John Trevethan: Marriages Amador County, California; LDS film #1302976; Book A, Pg 197. NOTE: John Trevethan to Elizabeth Grose Apr 6, 1872 in Amador City, by J.M.Campbell, minister.
!I believe Elizabeth GROSE was sister of Daniel GROSE who married Elizabeth A.THOMAS, sister of James Jolley THOMAS. When John Trevethan died, Elizabeth GROSE TREVETHAN married James Jolley THOMAS.
1880 Census has James J THOMAS & wife Elizabeth sharing house with James' sister Bessie Grose & husband Daniel "GROVES" per 1880 census taker. They are 2 doors down on Main Street from Daniel "GROVES" age 52, a Quartz Miner from England & his wife Lydia age 51 born England & their son Peter age 13 born Australia.
IGI has a Daniel GROSE chr. 22 Jul 1828 Kenwyn, Cornwall, son of Peter & Sarah:
Peter & Sarah Grose Children per IGI:
Elizabeth chr. 23 Jan 1824 Kenwyn
Peter chr. 13 Nov 1825 Kenwyn
Thomas chr. 25 Jul 1826 Kenwyn
Daniel chr. 22 Jul 1828 Kenwyn
So this is undoubtedly the correct family. As Elizabeth GROSE TREVETHAN THOMAS listed in Marriage Record as born in Wales, I suspect you would find the family in Wales together in the 1851 Census, if they were no longer in Cornwall. Parents, at least, were in Australia by 1867 as son Peter born there.
CHRISTENING: Baptism Records 1834-1959, Sithney Parish, Cornwall, England; LDS film #0254180; Pg 367, #21. NOTE: Family living in "Chenhale", father listed as a Miner. {Date is difficult to read: either 5th or 6th of May}

109. Elizabeth Ann "Bessie" THOMAS
ORAL HISTORY: Per Edith RICHARDS BIGGS, in oral interview, circa 1879: Bessie Grose was a cousin of mother's. She lived in Butte, Montana. Photo shown labeled Bessie Grose & Husband, which looks like their wedding photo. Another photo shown of an older Bessie & different husband, indicating she was now Bessie Grose Richards.

Grose Daniel Truro 5c 207
!BIRTH: Per 1880 Census, Amador City, Amador Co, California, Sup Dist 2, ED 36, written pg #3, printed pg #64. Age listed as 28, born in England.
!NOTE: Elizabeth GROSE was sister of Daniel GROSE who married Elizabeth A.THOMAS, sister of James Jolley THOMAS.

Dates are sadly "at odds" for this little one. The only way to sort it out would be to send for her birth cert. thru the GRO. Undoubtedly Emma was born some time between May & July of 1871:
!CHRISTENING: Baptism Records 1834-1959, Sithney Parish, Cornwall, England. LDS film #0254180; Pg 488, #18. NOTE: Emma dgter of Thomas & Mary Ann Thomas of Trevarno Mine, chr. 3 June 1873, "born 31 May". Father listed as a Miner. {I've chosen to list Emma as born July 1871, but this is still a guess. I do not believe there were 2 dgters named Emma as "2nd one" would have been christened before the "1st one" died. She is not listed in 1871 Census, so wasn't born until after April of 1871. Family was lagging in christening children & parents were illiterate, so probably did not write down birth dates. They may not have been sure of her exact birth date. Perhaps Emma became ill by June 1873 and was christened quite quickly, then died that same month.}
!DEATH-PARENTS-BURIAL: Monument Stone; Sithney Parish Churchyard, Cornwall,
England; Info brought back by Richard Biggs via slide pictures: "Emma, died June 9th, 1872, Aged 2 years." {Dates on this monument are quite inaccurate as the stone was errected much after the fact. Appox. age at death would probably not be wrong, however.}
!BURIAL-AGE: Burial Records; Sithney Parish 1851-1895, Cornwall, England; LDS Film #1596228. NOTE: Emma Thomas of Trevarno Mine, buried 25 June 1873, age 1year & 11 months. {This would make her birth date as July 1871. Family may have had more time to figure out Emma's approx. date of birth by time of burial.}
BIRTH: Christening Records, 1813-1834, Sithney Parish, Cornwall, England; LDS film #1596227; page 191, #1521. NOTE: Christened as "Mary." Family history, per Edith RICHARDS BIGGS, hands her name down as "Mary Jane." This info came from a list of brothers & sisters of Joseph Henry THOMAS, probably recorded by Mayme THOMAS RICHARDS from oral history from her father, Joseph H. THOMAS who lived with her many years before his death.
!MARRIAGE: Mary Jane Thomas; Oral Interview with Edith Biggs circa 1878, "Mother said Mary Jane married a Kneebone. We might be related to the ones in Grass Valley." Notes held by Roberta Richards Peeples.
!MARRIAGE-PARENTS: Marriage Cert; 1849; General Register Office, St.Catherine

Per 1871 Census, Susan Ann Thomas was born in Wendron. It is probable that her mother went home to her own parents to have her first baby.
!BIBLE: Bible Record from Susan Ann's younger sister, Elizabeth Ellen who married John Richards THOMAS lists Susan Ann THOMAS' birth: "Susan A. Thomas Roberts Aug 25 1863". Year is consistly correct per Christening & Census', but as Susan was Chr. on Aug 3, 1863, day of birth must be off. I don't believe chr. date misread, as next entry in christening records was a child christened Aug 9. Bible was not started until at least time of Elizabeth Ellen's marriage in 1895, Chicago and probably dates even later to time of their children. As parents John THOMAS/Susan TOY were illiterate, they would not have written children's birth dates down

!ORAL HISTORY: Per Irene Gresens, her granddgter, Mary Jane married a man younger than herself, and lied about her age at the time of her marriage. Over the years, her stated age became a "moving target" and was a source of amusement in her family. When she died, her family wasn't really sure exactly how old she was, slowing family research for years. (Through family research, we're now fairly certain her birth date was 6 May 1864. She had lied about her age by exactly 5 years for the 1900 Census in Chicago.)

and is buried in Sithney Churchyard. On her death, their only daughter Annie, who married William
Pryor, took over the pub. They had two children, Richard Thomas Pryor and John Angove Pryor. Annie
retired from the pub when she was quite elderly and died a few years ago, The boys and I played
together, and went to School together. We are lifelong friends. Will drank himself to death years ago.
Richard was son of Stephen and Grace Angove and was born in 1866. He married Sarah late in life
and they had one daughter Annie. Annie had relations in Grass Valley, descendents of her fathers
eldest brother, another Stephen (1850). These facts were related to me by Annie before she died. I
agree with you that these Richard's are difficult to sort, but I have done it. Richard (1866) and his
brother Stephen (1850) together with my Great granfather William (1848) were 1st cousins to your
Richard, John and Jeremiah who moved to Grass Valley."

"He Passes Away Last Night at His Home on Orchard Street."
"William R.Thomas passed away at his home on Orchard street last night at 9:30 o'clock, after a lingering illness. He had been a sufferer from miners' consumption and asthma for several years.
Mr.Thomas was an honest and upright man, and before ill-health overtook him he was actively engaged in mining. About twelve years ago he came to this place from Sierra City, where he had mined for a long time. He was thoroughly posted on every branch of his chosen occupation, and his sevices were always in demand. He came to America from Cornwall, England, in the early 60's and located in this State. After several years he returned to his native land and spent some time there. A desire to again visit California urged him to return, and thirtry-five years ago he landed in this State for the second time.
To mourn his death are left a widow two sons, William and Sidney Thomas of this city, two daughters, Mrs.John W.Thomas of Sierra City and Mrs.Nicholas Cavern of Jackson, Amador county.
The deceased was aged about sixty-seven years. He was a member of Court Pride of the Sierras, A.O.F., of Sierra City, and his funeral will take place there under the auspices of that organization. The remains will be forwarded from here tomorrow morning."

In his chosen occupation Mr.Thomas was successful and was well-informed on the subject of gold mining. Of last he has been a sufferer from miners' consumption but manly struggled to conquer his affliction and last night Death entered and claimed him.
